Took the last flight of his life's journey on September 9, 2013. He was the son of the late Captain Francesco Barbero (USN-Ret.) and Pearl McSwain.
Rick was a 1966 graduate of The United States Naval Academy. Lt Commander Barbero (call-sign Boot) was a decorated, carrier certified fighter pilot. Rick performed his combat missions against the enemy forces from a carrier off the coast of the Republic of South Vietnam, while assigned to VF-102 the famous "Diamond Backs".
After Rick's service with the Navy, he became a Virginia Beach Police Officer. Enjoying the thrill and hunt of law enforcement, he realized the importance and value, and sought acceptance in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Subsequent to completing the rigors of FBI training, Rick became a career Special Agent. His Service entailed working against various forms of criminal organization, including racketeering influenced crime organizations. Never content with sitting still, Rick entered his fourth and perhaps best loved career as an international commercial pilot.
Rick's lifelong commitment was to the service of his country. His hearts passion was to the absolute devotion to his family. His memory will be cherished by his beloved wife of 34 years, Carolyn Theresa Barbero and his beautiful princess, daughter, Courtney Theresa Barbero.
Rick believed in living life to the fullest, enjoying your moments and "not wasting your ticks". A Celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, 2013 in the Great Neck Chapel of Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the American Lung Cancer Association at www.lung.org. Condolences may be offered to the family at
