As a childhood friend of Manning in Moorefield, I knew Manning as a young boy. I remember building a model airplane for him, encouraged by his father. I followed his career with interest, proud that we both carried our rural origins with us to Harvard and beyond. I am forever grateful to his father, H. Gus Muntzing, for helping to guide me in my own career development. Our paths separated long ago, but Manning was always part of my world.
