Peteo, you were a friend, a colleague, and a true patriot. I think of you often. A legacy of the NORAD false alarms, newly promoted one stars led crews in Cheyenne Mountain. As the sole Flag level civilian on the Battle Staff (but col, USAF (Ret)), I was responsible for developing much of the launch detection and attack assessment process. You were the most receptive, understanding, and dedicated Command Director during my nearly twenty year tenure. I remember well when Tom Moorman, then Commander of AFSPC, appointed you to investigate complaints against an AFSPC senior. (Tom, who rose to be Vice Commander in Chief, died only days ago.) You conducted the interviews not only expertly but also with compassion. We reminisce about Gayles sun glasses with lenses in the shape of Texas. Our senior staff socials were legendary. Rest well, my kind friend.

Gayle and family, My heartfelt condolences on the passing of General Peterson. I worked as his Executive Officer in the Directorate of Operations, AETC, Randolph AFB. He had it all--a true leader and gentleman. He was so kind and supportive to his staff, and he always had time to talk. I recall on a visit to the Pentagon years later when he was the DP, myself and another former staff member stopped by his busy office to say 'hi' and he took time out of his busy day just to sit and chat with us.
My mother passed of the same disease and I pray for a cure some day. I share your sorrow on the loss of this wonderful man.
Warm regards,
Betsy J. Gips

I've just learned from My sister in Texas that we've lost Lt. General Peterson, I am in sorrow, his time in retirement was too short after such a long and distinguished career serving this great nation. Cousin Don was an inspiration to me as a boy and later as an Airman myself as he was to thousands of Airman as well. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Gayle and family, Sister Gail and Brother Pete.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Don's passing. We have lost a fine man, an officer and gentleman and one who could always make you smile. We who had the opportunity to know and work with him were truly blessed. Gayle, you and Peteo were quite a pair, a wonderful AF couple. Please accept my condolences. May God bless you and your sons during this difficult time.
