Joseph Wallace Obituary

WALLACE Joseph Francis wallace " Joey" (Age 62) Of Richmond, VA, departed this life on February 24, 2016. He is survived by his wife, the love of his life Jeanne Wallace; two beloved sons, Sam and James Wallace; his sister, Rita Burke and her husband Frederic; two brothers, Terry Wallace, his wife Haas and Patrick Wallace. In addition he is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. He was the son of Margaret and Dr. Joseph J. Wallace. He grew up in Bethesda, MD, graduated from Walt Whitman High School earned his undergraduate at Boston College, his Master''s at University of Maine, and received his Doctorate at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. A lifelong Redskins fan and Deadhead, Joey dedicated his career to the service of people with disabilities, and his work touched and changed the lives of thousands. He developed innovative and much-needed programs at the Bureau of Mental Retardation in Lewiston, ME, and at Southside Virginia training center, the Virginia Assistive Technology Service, The Partnership for People with Disabilities, the Assistive Technology Loan Fund Authority and the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA). He was currently serving as director of RESNA''s Catalyst Project in Washington, DC, commuting weekly between his office and home in Richmond, and he continued to travel the world consulting on low interest assistive technology loan programs. For twenty years, he taught a class on disability studies at John Tyler Community College. He enjoyed spending time at his beach house "Wally World" in the outer banks. Joey once explained his life''s mission as "breaking down barriers that hold people back." A relentless and quietly forceful advocate for people with disabilities, Joey''s compassionate attention to all he met and his heartfelt refusal to accept categories that separate us from each other won him the monicker The Doctor of Love. Joey''s friendships range back to infancy and around the world. As his longtime colleague Ken Knorr recalls, "he was the world''s best listener, and did not know how to burn a bridge." His example of how to live a good and loving life is his real legacy to all who knew him. A Celebration of Joey''s life will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the Bon Air Community Association Banquet Hall, 8725 Quaker Lane, Richmond, VA 23235, on Thursday, March 3. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Fabry Disease Foundation, which represents the rare genetic disorder that affected Joey.

Dear Jeanne and family,
I'm so sorry to hear belatedly of your tragic loss. Had I known sooner, I certainly would have made efforts to attend your remembrance gathering. Joey was a great friend when we were in college and after. I was always so pleased for him that he had met you, the love of his life. I know he remained always a wonderful husband and father. I'll never forget the great times Joey and I spent during our wildly misspent youth. One can scarcely put into words how proud we all felt about his professional accomplishments in his later years. My deepest condolences to you and yours.

There is a common theme in all of the tributes to Joey and that one word is Love. Joey knew the power of hug, kiss, listening ear and simple words that things will work out. He was a friend and mentor to me and I will truly miss him. May your heartfelt memories comfort his family and friends.

I was so very sorry to learn of Joey's passing. Sam was one of my close friends in high school, and I had the privilege of getting to know him all those years ago. What I learned is that he was an amazing dad, that loved his family more than anything, and made everyone feel welcome in his home. He was an exceptional guy, and I know he will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to the Wallace family during this time..

Sadness when I think about his "free spirit" not being with us. He was just a great friend. On the other hand, we celebrate that his free spirit is actually, really free now! Thank you for being part of our earth bound existence. Love to family and all his many friends and admirers.

Joey Wallace was a cool guy, a great listener, smart, and engaging. Since I was a kid, my life was unreliably tangential with Joey's. Playing basketball at the Wallace's, over at Rita & Buzzy's, at family events with the sweet & kind Jeanie. Yet every time I was with him, it was interesting and 'right', I was better for it - such a good, good guy. Thaddeus Burke

What a fine friend and heartfelt advocate for others in need. Joey gave of himself with such simple grace that it's only after he's gone that one can see just how broadly he cared for others. We shall miss his smile, humor, and love for others - his family, his friends, his colleagues, the music.

You know how you think fondly of someone from time to time (and actually smile or laugh out loud at a memory!)? And you always enjoy hearing how they are doing, what they've been up to, challenges, successes, transitions? Well, that was me. I always thought that I would run into Joey at any time, and we would enjoy catching up with each other, however briefly. Sadly, that day did not come. But I don't feel cheated at all - I am grateful for the time that I did spend with him as a peripheral member of his tribe! To me that demonstrates the remarkable spirit that inhabited Joey's physical body. (For the record, the last time I spent time with Joey in person, he was telling me about the "bar bet" he could now use to prank people - after all, who would bet that someone has 3 kidneys?) Joey, may your merry prankster spirit live on! Akal, akal, akal.
