LENORE EHRIG Obituary

The Honorable LENORE G. EHRIG  (Age 89)
Of Washington, DC, passed away on July 31, 2013. Born February 26, 1924, in Queens, NY, to Albert and Charlotte Goodwin, on October 16, 1948, Lenore married Leo J. Ehrig, Jr., in Washington, DC. Loving mother of Charles (Chuck) Ehrig and James (Jim) Ehrig, she also had three grandsons, Sean, Thomas and William.  Lenore received her law degree in 1951 from George Washington University Law School, and soon was a partner in the law practice of Daly and Ehrig. She joined the Federal Communications Commission in 1963 and became an administrative law judge in February 1970. In April 1979, Lenore was appointed the Chief Administrative Law Judge for the Federal Communications Commission. She was the first female Chief Administrative Law Judge of a federal agency. Lenore was president of the Women's Bar Association of the District of Columbia and the National Association of Women Judges, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Maret School. She volunteered as a reader recording legal books for the blind, a tutor at John Eaton Elementary School, and a mediator for the D.C. Superior Court's Multi-Door Dispute Resolution Services, and also volunteered for the Kennedy Center and Martha's Table.  A private memorial gathering was held by the family. In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Lenore's name to Children's Hospital in Washington, DC.

I knew Lenore as a mediator in several of our programs at D.C. Superior Court. She mediated as a volunteer for more than twenty years. She was unfailingly kind and the epitome of neutrality. She will be long remembered here.

We never got to know Lenore well, but saw her at many DC United soccer games over the past few years. Her smile was very infectious and she always had an opinion on how to fix the team. She will truly be missed by us.

My Aunt Lenore was a groundbreaking Federal Judge who never judged her family or friends. We were family by chance; best friends by choice. She was my teacher, my secret keeper, my soulmate. She was a special lady, wise and full of grace. My inspiration; my idol. I like to think I am a better person because of her. She will live with me forever. Lise

My Aunt Lenore was a groundbreaking Federal Judge who never judged her family or friends. Aunt and niece by fate, best friends by choice, she has been my inspiration, my teacher, my soul mate for so many years. I will miss her always, but she will remain in my heart forever. Lise

Lenore was a dear friend of 40 plus years - since I had her son, Jimmy, in the second grade at the Maret School. We have kept in touch through all these years and shared a lunch date once a year. I marvelled at her spunk - working as a volunteer at Soup Kitchens; tutoring in the schools; and her work at the Superior Court - all this work well into her 80's. I will miss her. Hats off to you, Lenore!!!!
