Dear Pat, Rick and I just learned of Bob's death. We loved him and we love you. Bob was always so kind and gentle- he took care of Aunt Laura and his mother with a smile even when the Florida car accident presented quite a problem, and most of all everyone was so glad to see him- always glad to see and speak and listen to him. Thinking of you. Susan and Rick Medalie

Dearest Pat and Kids,
Growing up, my father always sat with us at bedtime and told us funny stories, nearly always made up, except for the "Bob and Mel" stories. We drifted off to sleep (after much barely stifled giggling)with visions of their Harvard hi-jinx in our heads - Bob was a wonderful man and a wonderful friend to my dad. He will be remembered with great fondness by the Bergheim family.

Mrs Wald,
I worked for your husband at the Romanian American Enterprise Fund. He was a guiding light to me and my Romanian colleagues in his pursuit of development of this country emerging from communism. Many people here benefited from his wisdom, kindness and determination to do good.

I think he was the kindest and most involved dad in our wonderful little neighborhood. My life was surely enriched for having known him a bit and for having been on the receiving end of his well known thoughtfulness! Warmest wishes to the entire Wald family during this time and always.

There used to be a custom in some parts of this country whereby their colleagues would address the very most senior and distinguished lawyers as "Judge," even though they were not actually judges in any court. It was a wonderful tradition: ...informal elevation by virtue of one's ethics, efficacy and intellectual eminence. Unfortunately, it's faded away. If it had not, I am certain that Bob Wald would have long ago acquired this honorific title.
He was brilliant, sober, and honest as the day is long. Many lawyers made more headlines, but I doubt there were any who were more respected privately for their experience, wisdom, and temperament. In his quiet way, Bob Wald kept the justice system working the way it was meant to work, for all its citizens.
His wife of more than half a century, Pat, ascended deservedly to the federal bench. She is, literally and figuratively, Judge Wald. I'll always think of her husband Bob by that title, too.
