A. DANE BOWEN, JR., Ph.D.  
On Monday, July 18, 2011, A. Dane Bowen, Jr., Ph.D., Retired Foreign Service Officer, Professor Emeritus of History and Economics, Lock Have University of PA. He is survived by Susan Grady of Alexandria; sons, Steve and Scott Bowen of Alexandria, and Don Bowen of Acton, MA; granddaughter, Amanda Butterworth of Concord, MA; brother, Stan Bowen of New Braunsfel, TX; and sister, Minta Mercready of Houston, TX. Friends will be received on Friday, July 22, 2011 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria, VA 22302. Service and interment will be later in Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to a favorite charity.www.everlyfuneralhomes.com

My mother, now 90, and I were sorry to come across this news in the Washington Post. I remember when he and his young family used to come visit us in McLean, after having served in Paraguay with my dad, Albert Carter. Condolences to you all.

I saw your note about Dr. Bowen's death on the OGSGS list. As a long time researcher of Orangeburg families I am very sorry that we have lost someone of his gifts and his dedication to family history. My thoughts and sympathy are with his family, who have lost so much more.
