My son Hatton is a professional illustrator and that is in no small part of John's mentoring and instruction. Mary, I am sorry to hear of his passing. We speak of John often and Hatton remember's his words which have helped shape the man and the artist.

I have fond memories of what a great artist John was. I remember I was always impressed with his work. You loose touch with friends and just expect they will always be around. We were very saddened by John's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary and the family. 2 Thes. 3:16, Linda & Sam Herod

Dear Mary,
Although I only met you and John once (in Joel Pollack's company), I very much enjoyed meeting you both and appreciate the way you opened your home to me. I had a great time seeing John's fantastic collection that day, and was always glad to get notice of a new exhibit of his art from you. Please accept my condolences, and know that I'm thinking of both of you.
This is John's comic book want list, which he sent me in June, 1967.

I'm very saddened to hear of John's death.
I first met John over 50 years ago at one of the New York Comic Cons or perhaps it was at one of the Smithsonian Institution's chalk talk events.
He was super friendly and invited me to his home, which was very kind of him considering I was only 12 or 13 years old at the time. I was blown away when I saw that he stored his comic collection in his kitchen cabinets!
I purchased several examples of his original artwork and traded Superman #10 for the original art to John's first published fanzine cover, Rocket's Blast Special #5 from 1964.

Very sad to read this news. I was a huge fan of John's work growing up in the 1970s, and was very fortunate to have met him just a few years ago at a comic art get together in Maryland. I recall how surprised I was to see his name at a table and what a wonderful conversation we had. A very very talented man and he could not have been nicer in talking about his work with me.

John and Mary have always meant the world to me, and John was a mentor and inspiration as well as good friend.
It was a pleasure to have known him and worked with him, and I treasure every single one of the illustrations, notes, sketches and cards I've received from him over the past 40 yrs. His tremendous talent was matched only by his generous heart.
R.I.P., my friend. You will be sorely missed, but never, ever forgotten.

Dear Mary and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of John's passing. In 1978-80, John and I worked in the same building and I was so envious that he was doing what I had wanted to do as my life's work. I spent many days looking over John's shoulder in the art shop and thinking about how my life would have been so different had I gone down the same route.
I wish you and your family our heartfelt sympathies. He was an inspiration to me and countless others.

Dear Mary,
So sad ... I am crushed by the news. It's been over a year since I talked to John and I feel very guilty about it. I was planning on stopping by last week and other plans got in the way as they always seem to do.
It must be devastating for you. As you know, I lost my son Steven a few years back, and it was a very difficult time for Kim, Jeff and I. I still think about Steve every single day, and he now brings a smile to my face, rather than sadness. Know this: as time goes on, it will get better, and you will think about John with great joy.
I truly believe John is in heaven feeding peanuts to Joe, Betty Lou, Eddie, Cleo, Chloey and Zooey ...
