To the entire Hensel Family, may you find comfort in the time of sadness with each other support. God will help you through this very difficult time. I did not hear of his passing until last night. Even though I have not seen David in at least 15years I will always remember walking home from school (St. Hughes) and cutting through the woods into Boxwood. In those days I did not have many friends and was very thankful to know David! He was always kind to me and fun to be around.

With my deepest sympathy!

I don't think words can fully express my family's deep gratitude to all those who have been praying for us, posted comments, visited us during the past week, sent food and cards, and who came out to pray with us on Sunday and Monday. Your support and love bring us great comfort. Although the void that we are left with will never be filled, we know that our faith will help us heal and that the love David shared with all of us will last forever. Please continue to keep our family, especially Tim and Brendan, in your prayers. Peace and love to you all.

To the Hensel Family,
Our prayers are with you!

To Dave's sons,
I had not seen your dad for many years and this past November 13th I ran into him and your mom at St Hughes Church. We visited for a while and all he could talk about were his sons. He was very proud of both of you. Your dad was a good man and friend.

When I think about David, I think about Dave and Don...where you saw one, you usually saw the other. Growing up in Greenbelt, I remember Dave always telling some great stories and getting on topics of conversation that were way over my head. He was funny and kind. I feel fortunate that I saw him just this summer when he came to my 40th with Don. Same kind guy with some kinda funny story. He will be missed by many.

May your family find healing and peace. I am so sorry for you loss.

Growing up in Greenbelt I have always thought as David as Don and Dave. When you saw one,you usually saw the other. Dave came to my 40th birthday party just this past summer with Don. He is the guy I will always remember for his humor and conversations that were always way over my head. I would be in awe just listening to him. He will be missed. May your family find healing and peace.

Since moving back to Maryland in 2002 after 22 years of living out west, I have enjoyed Holiday meals with the Hensel family. David, his sisters, mom and in-laws have all welcomed me and my children as part of the family. My son was sad to hear of David's passing, he recalls this Thanksgiving, "David was the first person to welcome me, and we talked about my motorcycle". As my two children were a few years older than his sons, we frequently discussed how the kids were doing, when they were not listening to our conversation. What impressed me was how proud he was of his sons, and what a loving and unselfish parent he was. He always wanted the best for them. My thoughts and prayers are with his sons, and his entire family.

Dear Mary & family,
So sad to receive your call and news of David. Please remember that he is now at peace and in a better place. Remember the fun times and memories that he has given you. I loved to hear David talk. Always so enthusiastic and friendly. When my husband, Rich, drove my car with the oil light on David offered to fix it for little of no money. He was such a generous person. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

During a trip to Greenbelt in September I got to see David for a few brief moments after not having seen him for something in the neighborhood of 20 years. To see how he and others looked just the same made me homesick. I have lived away from the area for a very long time and get back rarely. That David and I share a birthday will now mean that day will always be more meaningful. My hope is that everyone give each other the support and pleasant surprises we all need and remember David always.

I am so saddened to hear of your family's loss but even sadder to learn of his long-time struggle with depression. You are so right, depression is an awful and ugly disease but what's even worse is the stigma which has been attached to it in America. While I do truly love my country, something must be done to reverse that. Perhaps, I can help you find a way to make that happen for David-and for people like me. My prayers are with you all.

My prayers to the entire Hensel family.
My David memory: I used to call him my hero. Every time I would see him my mind would flash back to my earliest memory of Dave. I had to be 7 or 8 and Dave was 2 years older. I was riding my new bike, which was too big for me, in the woods between Lakewood and Boxwood. At one point I had to lift it over a fallen tree and it got stuck. The wheels were lodged and I couldn't budge it. I was crying and pulling on it for what seemed like a long time. And then like Superman, Dave appears, jumping over the fallen tree and lifting the bike from the tangles of the tree. He said something like, "Here you go" and was off. I was in absolute awe. He's been my hero ever since.
To the entire Hensel family, a reminder that none of you are alone. You have a wonderful family full of passion and compassion and my prayer is that through this, the bonds you have with each other will only strengthen.

David will be deeply and truly missed by so many of his Greenbelt friends. He was very kind and cared about others, making him a simply wonderful person to be around. Words cannot express how we truly feel about him.
We know that David's passing will not only leave a void in each of our own lives who considered him a wonderful friend, but also in the hearts of all those who knew him.
