JACK L. DICKS (Age 82)
Former Director of Communications Engineering and Research at INTELSAT, passed away on August 10, 2016 from complications from Alzheimer''s disease. Mr. Dicks was born in Durban, South Africa and moved to Newfoundland, Canada in 1957 where he met his wife, Mary. Jack moved from Newfoundland to Montreal, Canada in 1960 where he worked for Canadian Marconi and later at Teleglobe Canada, as Engineering Manager. In 1967, he joined COMSAT Engineering Group working on transmission planning. In 1978, Mr. Dicks joined INTELSAT where he directed a wide range of system design analyses and established the INTELSAT Technical Laboratories for simulation and measurement programs. He was a co-developer of a patent on a method for improving transmission linearity on earth station high powered transmitting amplifiers. After retiring from INTELSAT, Mr. Dicks joined W.L. Pritchard and Co. and spent several years working and consulting on issues in the telecommunications field. Mr. Dicks is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary; his two daughters, Jacqueline Heptinstall and Karen Roche; and his three grandchildren, Jack, Michael and Kellie Heptinstall. Family will receive guests from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 19 at Adams-Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden St., Herndon, VA. Service, 3 p.m., Saturday, August 20, also at Adams-Green Funeral Home. Mr Jack Dicks, my first boss at Intelsat in the Engineering Dept. is somebody that i will miss very much, so will everyone who worked with him. We wish his family God's comfort and strength at this time.

I am truly sorry to learn that Jack has passed away. I was one of many who worked with him or for him. It was a period of time at COMSAT and INTELSAT. It was a great privilege.

I have been contending with a problem with seizures which exhibit themselves as sudden blackouts. I am seeing a Neurologist, and have been advised not to drive. We are hopeful that the things will get better.

Dear Mary, Karen, Jacquelyn and family;

I was very saddened to hear of Jack's passing. He was a great guy and a good friend, and we enjoyed a lot of laughs together. I'll always smile when I think of him, and I'm sure I will think of him often. We sure shared a lot of fun times together, our group of friends. Great memories of trips to the Caribbean and Ocean City, New Year's Eve at Jack and Mary's, adventures at the Northern Neck, such as all of us carrying Steve's Hobie to the end of the dock and launching it in a manner it's designer would never have envisioned. And little projects that our group tackled together; rebuilding the dock after hurricane what's-its-face, installing a new headliner in the old Dodge, the gazebo raising at the Sexton's house and a bunch of other fun things that brought our group of friends together. And hey, in the spirit of the Olympics, let's not forget those Club Med Gold Medals we all won for best picnickers. Those were the best of times...He'll be missed.

Jack was very gentle, very unassuming in spite of his considerable accomplishments and responsibilities. These days God does not seem to be creating good people like Jack that often. I wish the family the courage to withstand their loss..
