FRANK TARKINGTON Obituary

FRANK VICTOR TARKINGTON  (Age 102)
Of Silver Spring, MD, died at his home on April 19, 2018. Frank was born in Oakland, California, March 24, 1916 and was orphaned at an early age. He married Eileen Coan in 1940 and they recently celebrated their 77th anniversary. Frank is the beloved father of Frank Victor Tarkington (Sylvia), Steven Alan Tarkington (Martha), Robert Lee Tarkington (Jacqueline) and Daniel Kevin Tarkington (Mary Kathleen). He was preceded in death by a beloved grandson and is survived by seven other grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Frank joined the United States Navy in 1940 and served five years. While on the island of Tinian, he witnessed the arming of the Enola Gay. Frank was advanced in rate to Chief Radioman until the war was over. His service in the Navy was a springboard for a long career with Radio Corporation of America (RCA). Frank installed the first television in the White House so that President Truman could witness the opening of Congress in January 1948. After retirement, Frank became an active volunteer for Montgomery County Consumer Affairs where he served for 19 years. Frank, an avid ham radio operator, loved his family and friends dearly and always had a great joke or story to tell. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will occur at a later date and plans for a celebration of Frank's life will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Frank's memory to: Montgomery Hospice, 1355 Piccard Drive, Suite 100, Rockville, MD 20850. www.CollinsFuneralHome.com

Frank was my neighbor over the back fence for many years. He always had a story to tell me and always always always had a great big smile and a twinkle in his eyes. There was just something special about the guy. He will always hold a special place in my heart. Sending hugs and all my love to the Tarkington family.

I worked with Frank at the Office of Consumer Protection. He had already been a volunteer for many years when I joined the staff. He was great to work with and helped me with several cases over the years. When we found out our birthdays were a few days apart, but several decades in between, we always tried to wish each other a happy birthday. I loved talking with him about his life and the many things he had seen in his lifetime. After Frank retired from volunteering, I really appreciated that John Creel would give me updates on Frank and put us in touch around the time of our birthday's so we could talk and wish each other the best. What a wonderful man, my deepest sympathies to the family. He will be greatly missed.

He was a kind, funny and amazing person. I remember his yummy crab dip, taking me to a Thai restaurant, gave me Japanese yen and enjoyed meals together at their lovely home. All those memories are so precious to me. Thank you very much for being wonderful for all of us.
I send my deepest condolences to all Tarkington family.

To the family of a revered individual:
Frank Tarkington must have been an amazing person. He, along with his wife, certainly demonstrated and conveyed to their family, the value and strength of love and commitment, energy and health. These traits are evident in his granddaughter, Hilary, and through her words about her family, it's easy to respect and admire all of you. Peace be with you as you grieve this wonderful person.

We will miss Frank. I first met him when he Volunteered for me and our staff at the Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection. He came 2 days a weeks took phone calls and worked on cases. A true professional. He was a giving man.
Look at what he saw and accomplished during his life.
