Early-to-mid 1960's, a young Fr. Beattie introduces his sense of humor to St. Ambrose's nuns after Mass one bright summer morning. Enlisting an anonymous altar boy, they secretly jack up the rear end of the nuns station wagon, remove lug nuts, restore hub caps, lower rear end onto wooden blocks, replace wheels loosely, but now unattached. Jim Beattie and altar boy hide behind hedges and await the nuns regular morning car run. The nuns emerge to start the car, rev the engine and the car doesn't move. After repeated attempts to figure out what was wrong one of the wheels dislodges and starts rolling down the street. Recognizing a prank about to go bad, Jim Beattie, in T-shirt, khaki's and loafers, hurdles the hedge and in a frantic sprint, stops the wheel half way down Jason Street before it hit anything. A roar of laughter ensued! As others have observed, St. Ambrose, and every parish Jim Beattie ever served in, would never be the same. So our lives were touched by this extraordinary man of God with a special ability to make us all laugh! May he rest in eternal peace !!!

I met Jim through my late brother-in-law, Jack Lyons. Jim, although not related to Jack, was his "brother". When the family gathered at Jack's house in Longport, NJ, Jim would grace us with a celebration of the Eucharist. Rest in peace, Jim.

Fr.Beattie played golf with my dad. On his 50 anniversary as a priest, I sent him a card, not sure if he would remember me. Silly me, his comment was of course I remember your family, you had a pool table in your living room. Our loss is heavens gain. Wonderful

Father Beattie was a brand new priest when he came to St. Ambrose in Cleverly, Maryland. His youth, easy going manner and mischievous sense of humor drew in all who met him. Us kids loved him. He was our favorite. He was a good and well loved priest who will be greatly missed. Well done, God's faithful servant.

During a CCD class at St. Ambrose a set of blinds fell on me. I was lucky to have Fathers Beattie and Pindar take me to the Emergency Room. It was the best and funniest ride I ever had to the Hospital!
I never knew a Priest could have such a sense of humor. My husband David and I were so lucky to have known him.

When young Fr. Beattie and Fr. Pindar arrived on the steps of St. Ambrose in Cheverly in the early 60's, the Parish was never the same. Their shenanigans made us all laugh. He was a great example to the school children. He joined us for a school reunion in 1988 and I think he remembered everyone there. The heavens will shine a little brighter today as he is reunited with his many friends.

May he rest in peace. We had a succession of good pastors at St. Camillus when I was growing up. Fr. Beattie was one of them, after serving an earlier stint as an Associate Pastor. He married my wife, Patty McMahon, and me on St. Patrick's Day in 1979. Many good memories of a man of God and of the people of God!

Msgr. Beattie came to St. Ambrose, Cheverly, MD after he was ordained during my high school years...was a wonderful example and spiritual guide to all the high school kids. Live in Fort Wayne, IN now and he was the Spiritual Advisor to our young men in the seminary. They had nothing but good things to say about him. Cece D.

Monsignor Beattie went to school with my dad at North Catholic and was our good shepherd at St. Bartholomew's. The world is a dimmer place without his twinkle and compassionate warmth, but what great good he did for so many who were blessed to know him. Fairways and greens always. In loving memory of a wonderful man of God. And what a legendary memory HE had. 30 years after serving at St Ambrose Cheverly, he remembered my parents and all 8 siblings names. One of the many ways he cared for his flock. Rest in peace!
