PETER BARNES Obituary

PETER BARNES
Peter Barnes who has died on January 3, 2014 at age 73 after a long battle with cancer was known for his wit, wisdom and probity. One would look far to find a more devoted husband and father, a more skillful advocate or a more engaging companion. He was the son of C. Tracy Barnes and Janet White Barnes of Washington DC and Rhode Island. Peter began his academic career at the Moses Brown School in Providence, RI and later graduated from Groton in 1958, Yale 1962 and Harvard Law School in 1965. He practiced law at the Washington, DC firm of Leva, Hawes, Symington, Martin and Oppenheimer until 1983 when he joined the firm of Veneble, Baetjer and Howard in Baltimore. Later he returned to Washington to join the firm of Swidler and Berlin where he remained until illness dictated his retirement. In later years Peter worked as an advisor to the Government Printing office. Peter was the husband of the former Jan Adair; father of John E. Barnes and Katharine Barnes Diana. He was the brother of Tracy Barnes, Linda Aaron and Jane Barnes. His marriage to the former Pauline Wilder ended in divorce. Peter was a member of the Metropolitan Club of Washington, DC and the Elkridge Club of Baltimore, MD. Services private, interment to be announced. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Baltimore Humane Society, 1601 Nicodemus Road, Reisterstown, MD 21136.  A guest book is available at www.lemmonfuneralhome.com

Peter was a great mentor and role model for many young attorneys. I enjoyed working with him and our chance meetings over the years. He was a great lawyer and gentleman in the purest sense of the word.

We are so sorry to hear of the loss of a Wonderful man as Mr. Barnes. Death is sad to hear but the hope of Everlasting Life can bring you much comfort.

I woke up this morning to read the sad news of Peter's passing. I walked dogs with Peter at the Shawan Rd. Field and we became friends. Our beloved Magnum and Ben have long since passed, but we still kept in touch. I was thrilled to hear from Peter as recent as Thanksgiving. I so looked forward to those daily walks and the company Peter provided. I don't know a nicer man. I think of him and say a prayer every time I ride by the field, that one day I would see him walking a poodle there again. Now, I will ride by and remember the many conversations we had, and the two dogs running happily together.
Jan, I never met you, but your name was mentioned in every sentence Peter uttered. He loved you so, and his children. My heart is heavy for you all at this time.
My deepest sympathies... Lisa Langmead
