Peacefully passed on Sunday, February 3, 2013. She was the first African American Congresswoman from Illinois and she served 24 years in the United States House of Representatives where she passed many groundbreaking pieces of legislation.
She is survived by her son, B. Kevin Coliins; granddaughter, Candice Collins. Service will be held Monday, February 11, 2013 at Alfred Street Baptist Church, 301 S. Alfred St., Alexandria, VA 22314. Visitation 10 a.m. until time of memorial service at 11 a.m. Arrangements by McGUIRE.
