James E. Dougherty

DOUGHERTY JAMES E. DOUGHERTY (Age 93) A resident of McLean. VA., Mr. Dougherty, passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2011. He was the loving husband of Edna P. Dougherty; beloved father of James E. Dougherty, MD and his wife Maureen A. Dougherty. He is also survived by his grandsons Matthew R. and his wife Carrie M. Dougherty, MD and Kevin R. Dougherty, MD and his wife Heather Tory Dougherty, MD; great-grandson Ryan Christopher Dougherty; his sister Virginia Hale and brother Vincent Dougherty. He was predeceased by his sister Marie Dooley. Mr. Dougherty is a Manhattan College School of Civil Engineering graduate of 1940. He also completed graduate studies in aeronautical engineering at MIT. He retired in 1993, as Technical Airworthiness Director from General Aviation Manufacturers Association. Previously he worked for the Federal Aviation Administration, retiring in 1979 as Assistant Chief, Aircraft Engineering Division, after a 35 year career. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a recipient of the Flight Safety Foundation "Laura Taber Safety Award." Mr. Dougherty served as an elected member of the Falls Church City Council, member and Chairman of the Falls Church Planning Commission, and of the Zoning Commission. He was active for many years in the Boy Scouts of America. He was a long-term member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as a 4th degree Knight. Visitation services will be held, in the chapel, at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7001 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA 22101 on Tuesday September 20 at 10 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in the main sanctuary at 11 a.m.; a reception will follow immediately after Mass in the Bishop Flaherty Hall.
