KARL KAFFENBERGER Obituary


KARL GUSTAV KAFFENBERGER  
Of Kensington, Maryland formerly of Granby, CT, died of natural causes on Sunday, January 5, 2014. Born February 3, 1918, Mr. Kaffenberger was brought up in the Buffalo, NY area. He was accepted to Brown University contingent on attaining the age of 17 years. He graduated from Brown, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1939. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and was commissioned December 19, 1942. Assigned to the Air Transport Command he flew many types of aircraft including C-47s in the European Theatre of Operations. He separated from the army in 1945 with the rank of Captain. He continued to enjoy flying into his late 60s. Mr. Kaffenberger was employed by Connecticut General Life Insurance Company and later the Atlantic Refining Company as a real estate appraiser and became a member of the Appraisal Institute, the national professional association, in 1954. He opened his own appraisal practice in Hartford, CT in 1958. He became an active member and leader of the Appraisal Institute and practiced for 39 years. He retired in 1993. He participated in the local zoning board in CT, was a founding member of the Granby Tennis Club and an early supporter of the Granby Land Trust.  Karl and his beloved wife of 70 years, Jeanne Cannon Kaffenberger, resided for 50 years in Granby, CT where they brought up their loving children: K.R. Kaffenberger (Suzanne) of Cambridge, MA, Jan Aber of Washington, DC, Kurt Kaffenberger (Martha) of Burlington, VT and Jason Kaffenberger (Donna) of Simsbury, CT. He is also survived by grandchildren: Blake Aber (Lisa) of Manhattan and Sam and Parnell Kaffenberger of Burlington, VT. Remembrances may be made in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project, Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 (www.woundedwarriorproject.org). So sorry to hear of the loss of Mr. Kaffenberger. I still have a patient leather evening bag, that "Max" had given to my mother (Betty Smith) for Christmas. That had to be 40 years ago. Love to the entire family and especially Jeanne. So many memories of the years my mom worked for Mr K.
