MARY KAREN READ, died April 16, 2007 at Virginia Tech.

She was born January 30, 1988 at the US Army Hospital in Seoul, South Korea, graduated from Annandale High School in 2006 and was a Freshman at Virginia Tech, majoring in interdisciplinary studies and preparing for elementary education. Mary was a member of Campus Crusade for Christ and had applied to be a Bible study leader-she was to have been notified of her acceptance on Monday.

Mary was enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program at Annandale High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society, the French Honor Society, the Tri-M Band Honor Society; she was president of the Annandale High School Band and a member of the Annandale's Homecoming Court. Mary also played lacrosse for two years and participated in winter Color Guard for four years. Mary loved spending time with her family and friends, especially on trips to the mountains, the beach or the lake, and was happiest when she was helping others-especially children.

Surviving are her father and step-mother, Peter and Catherine Read of Annandale; mother, Yon Son Yi (Zang) of Palisades Park, NJ; siblings, Stephen, Patrick, Brendan, Colleen and Hannah; grandparents, Dave and Katie Read of Macedon NY; aunt Mary Courtney and cousins Dan and Ted Courtney of Palmyra, NY; aunt and uncle Karen and Ted Kuppinger, and cousins, Zhanya and Ian Kuppinger of Rochester, NY; aunt and uncle, Yonni and Dave Martens, and cousin Brian of Woodbridge, VA. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday, April 23 at DEMAINE SPRINGFIELD-ANNANDALE CHAPEL, Backlick and Edsall Roads, Springfield, VA. A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. A Mass of Remembrance will be held at Noon on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at St. Mary of Sorrows Catholic Church in Fairfax Station. Interment will follow at Pleasant Valley Memorial Park in Annandale.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a scholarship fund established in Mary's honor in care of Annandale High School Band Boosters, 4700 Medford Drive, Annandale, VA 22003 or Pal-Mac Rotary, 101 East Main St. Palmyra, NY 14522 or St. Ann's Church, 136 Church St., Palmyra NY 14522.
