COIA ANGELO A. COIA (Age 74) Of Brigantine, NJ passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2013. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was a star running back at Northeast High School; where he earned All Public, All Scholastic and All American Honors. He attended the Citadel then transferred to the University of Southern California on a football scholarship where he earned All-Pac honors. In 1960 he participated in the Rome Olympic trials running in the 100 and 220 meters in which he reached the finals. He was drafted as a split end by the Chicago Bears in 1960 and was a member of the 1963 Championship Team. He played for the Washington Redskins 1964-1965 and the Atlanta Falcons in 1966, starting in the first game in Falcons history. Following his retirement from football, Angelo owned and trained Thoroughbred racehorses. He joined Al Davis and the Los Angeles Raiders in 1984 as a college scout. Mr. Davis was always a major factor in Angelo's life and mentored him from the age of 17. Angelo is a member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall Of Fame. He was an avid fisherman and he loved coaching football. He coached the Liberty Bell Youth Football in Northeast Philadelphia to 4 Championships from 1974-1984 and the Brigantine Rams JV Football from 2009-2012. Angelo was a compassionate and giving person and cared deeply about everyone and everything that touched his life. He was an inspiration of strength who found joy in the smallest ways. He taught those who knew him to look within themselves and discover a capacity to give to others with no expectation of anything in return. Angelo is survived by his loving wife, Connie; sister, Patricia and brother-in-law and best friend, Frank Tedeschi; his children, Patrick Coia (Nelly), Shannon Peters (Mike), Vicki Tierney (Joe), Bobby Gore and Andy Gore (Stacey). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Emily, Alana, Patrick, Haley, Kristen, Josh, David, Maddie and Myla; his niece Michelle; his nephew, Frankie and many good friends. Please join us to honor this amazing man at his Life Celebrations on Monday, January 7, 2013 from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Church, 8th Street and Brigantine Ave., Brigantine. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. and on Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 3252 Chesterfield Road, Philadelphia, PA. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. Interment is private.
