"Dusty" (Age 67)  

A native New Yorker, died February 12, 2013, at home in Alexandria, VA, after a long illness. Dusty was born and raised in Queens, New York, earned degrees at Hunter College and NYU, and taught English as a second language for more than 40 years. After teaching in public schools in the "Fort Apache" section of the Bronx, and in Woodside, Queens, in New York, she joined the Alexandria City Public Schools in 1991, serving as an ESL teacher and department head at T.C. Williams High School and later as an ESL curriculum specialist for the school system. She also taught ESL at Georgetown University and Northern Virginia Community College.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Joseph Barbato of Alexandria; a daughter, Louise Wyatt of Crozet, VA; a son, Joseph DeLait Barbato of Alexandria; and two grandchildren, Kathleen and Sebastian Wyatt. She is also survived by a sister, Kathleen Gonsalves, of Jackson Heights, NY; and two nephews, Anthony Gonsalves, of Jackson Heights, NY; and Christopher Gonsalves of Chelsea, Massachusetts.
A wake will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, February 18, at the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home in Alexandria (703-998-9200), Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 19, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1427 West Braddock Road.
