Barbara McFarland Mathews, 83, was a retired social worker who worked for the Fairfax County Health and Welfare Department and founded the Area Agency on Aging. She died peacefully in her sleep on November 4, 2012 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home. Mrs. Matthews was a native of Alexandria, Virginia and received her degree in social work from Guilford College in 1951. Upon graduation from Guilford College, she attended Smith College for one year. After her retirement, she volunteered at Kings Park Library binding books. Fairfax County Supervisor Sharon Bulova proclaimed June 13, 2004 Barbara Matthews Day in Braddock District, County of Fairfax, Commonwealth of Virginia. Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lawrence C. Matthews, Sr. and son Lawrence C. Matthews, Jr. Survivors include her daughters, Diane E. Kendall of Sterling; Linda Paul of Herndon; and Bonnie Matthews of Minneapolis; and three grandchildren, Lindsay Paul of Alexandria, Brian Paul of Manassas, and Melanie Kendall of Leesburg, Georgia.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 9 in the Chapel at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2701 Cameron Mills Road, Alexandria, VA 22302. The family will receive guests in the Johnson Parlor immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Barbara's name to either Guilford College c/o The Friends Center General Fund, Guilford College, 5800 Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410 or donations may be made to: Heritage Hall Family Council c/o Mrs. Paula Grant, P.O.
