CATHARINE L. SMITH
December 7, 1926 - November 21, 2012

Catharine L. Smith, was born in Duquesne, PA. Her marriage to William H. Roney ended in divorce. In 1961, she married Norman Smith who preceded her in death.

In her youth, she was a switchboard operator for Pennsylvania Bell, a sewing-factory worker, and a bookkeeper. She moved to Northern Virginia to be near her daughters, and became actively engaged in her community as a volunteer for the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra and the Gerry Connolly for Congress campaign. Whether attending the Fairfax Symphony and Providence Players musical and theatrical events, volunteering on Connolly's campaign, or communicating with her family and friends, she lived her life with energy and joy. She also spent as much time as she could with her children and nearby granddaughters. She was a kind and compassionate woman who will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

Catharine is survived by her children, Catherine Smith, Janet Shadle, and Stephen Smith, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two sisters, a brother, and myriad nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held, Friday, December 7, 2012, 7 p.m. at Wakefield Chapel, 8415 Toll House Road, Annandale, VA 22003. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra or to the Providence Players of Fairfax.
