DAVID DEAN Obituary

DEAN DAVID DEAN David Dean, born in New York City, NY on August 25, 1925, passed away peacefully at his home in Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield, VA on October 27, 2013, of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Mr. Dean served as Chairman, Director and Trustee of the American Institute in Taiwan from 1979 to 1995. The American Institute in Taiwan was established in 1979 to carry out U.S. unofficial relations with Taiwan after the United States established diplomatic relations with China. Mr. Dean was a Foreign Service Officer from 1951-1979. He first worked in Malaya and Holland. During the U.S.-China Talks in Warsaw, he was Counselor to the U.S. Ambassador (1964-66). He served as Director of the Office of Research and Analysis for East Asia and the Pacific in the Department of State. He served in Beijing as Deputy Chief of Mission, and in Hong Kong and Taipei as Political Counselor and Chargé d'affaires. Mr. Dean received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and his Master's degree from Columbia University. He was a graduate of the U.S. Foreign Service Chinese Language School in Taichung and a graduate of the State Department Senior Seminar in Foreign Policy. Mr. Dean was honorary advisor to the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange. He was advisor to the Rosita King Ho Foundation, and a former director of the American Association for Chinese Studies. Mr. Dean's lifelong interest in China and Taiwan was inspired by his years of service as a Navy pilot in the China Sea during WWII. He described his experiences in Asia in his forthcoming book, Unofficial Diplomacy: The American Institute in Taiwan, A Memoir. He will be remembered for his quick, warm sense of humor, his honor and integrity, his tremendous courtesy and kindness to all, his love of nature and his passion for gardening and his family. He was a gentleman and a gentle man. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Alice Dean, his brother Ambassador Jonathan Dean, his beloved sons and daughter-in-law Kenneth Dean and Catherine Herrmann Dean of Montreal and Thompson Dean of New York City, five grandchildren, Cora Emily Dean and David Ordway Dean of Montreal, and Julia Keating Dean, Thompson Danforth Dean, and Charles Wilkinson Dean of New York City, and many wonderful nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. His loving smile and laughter will be missed by all. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 12 noon at the Greenspring Chapel, 7420 Spring Village Drive, Springfield, VA, followed by a reception.
