DAVID MACDONALD Obituary

DAVID MACDONALD
David Macdonald passed away peacefully at home on October 8, 2012. Born in New York City on June 2, 1915, he had a long, distinguished career as a Maryland attorney, known for integrity, expertise in local law, and community service. Before launching a private practice in Rockville, where he worked for 50 years, Macdonald served as the first County Attorney for Montgomery County, after adoption of home rule in 1948. In 1950, he published the county's first compilation of public ordinances. He later served as delegate to the 1967-68 Maryland Constitutional Convention, as counsel in MD for the state of Ohio, and as town attorney for Laytonsville, MD. After contracting polio in his mid-30s, Macdonald worked tirelessly as President of the Montgomery County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. He performed pro bono work for many other community institutions and was actively engaged in county politics. Early in his career, Macdonald worked for the New York law firm of Rathbone, Perry, Kelley, & Drye and as Assistant Chief Counsel for the Joint House-Senate Committee on Labor Management Relations. He received a BS from Harvard College in 1936, and LLB and JD degrees from Harvard Law in 1939. Avid interests pursued throughout his life included golf, travel, verbal humor, and music. A devoted friend and family man, Macdonald Sr. was a loving and inspirational father to David Macdonald, Jr. (Madeline), Marianne Bean (Michael), and Sandra Macdonald (Paul Grossman), and a devoted grandfather of David (Esther) and Laura Miller (Ben Fraser). Macdonald is also survived by great-grandsons Rowan and Sawyer Miller and Grey and Leo Fraser. He was married for nearly 75 years to his beloved wife, Mary Louise, who died in June of this year. Interment will be private. Friends may pay their respects at the Parklawn Memorial Park Office, 12800 Veirs Mill Road, Rockville, MD 20853, Friday, October 12 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. See also www.barberfhlaytonsville.com .
