GLASS ELSA LILLY DIK GLASS 1923 - 2012 Elsa Dik Glass, age 89, of Arlington, Virginia, formerly of Washington, DC passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2012 at home. Private interment is scheduled for May 2013 in Syracuse, NY. Elsa was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 20, 1923. She was the daughter of Ella Fischer Dik Wagoner, and Selim H Dik, MD. She grew up in New York City and Upstate, graduating from Gowanda High School in 1941, where she was the salutatorian and first violinist in the Orchestra. She attended both George Washington University and Law School, and was a member of the DC Bar. Elsa was an attorney in private practice for 30 years in the District of Columbia, and also held the position of Administrative Judge for the EEOC, retiring in 1989. She authored a book on the Legal Status of Homemakers in the District of Columbia, which was included in a publication of the US National Commission on Women in 1977. Elsa was an active in the community. She was a founding member of the Women's Legal Defense Fund, as well as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, and sang in the Choir at Holy Trinity Church. She organized political campaigns for DC voting rights and was Republican Party precinct chair in 1964. She championed Civil Rights, Women's Rights, Children's Rights, and Native American Rights, providing pro-bono counsel for women who were victims of domestic abuse, and helped to establish the House of Ruth. Elsa loved traveling, visiting all continents except Antarctic and made professional connections worldwide, hosting lawyers from Japan, Sweden, Russia and Brazil. Her other passions were music and food. She held season's tickets to the Symphony and loved Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. She participated in Fan clubs and did considerable research on their lives. She relished cooking, and entertaining, introducing many to foreign cuisines. She could replicate recipes by taste. Elsa Dik Glass is survived by her children including: Elsa Anders and Robert Lauten of Purcellville, VA, Jane Ann Glass of Arlington, VA, Dik and Barbara Glass of Mystic, CT, Christian and Susan Glass of Garfield, AR, and Meg Glass of Greenwich, CT and her seven grandchildren: Drew Lauten and Rebecca Flaherty of Bluemont, VA, Garrett Lauten and Chris Sanford of Lanconia, Nova Scotia, Peter Lauten of Brussels, Belgium, Alex and Kate Glass of Norfolk, VA, Joanna Glass of NY, NY, and Christian and William Glass of Garfield, AR, and sisters, Gloria Hudson of Texas and Florence Stromberg of Missouri The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School for Girls, 1524 Thirty-Fifth Street, NW Washington, DC 20007-2785.
