EUGENE VALENTINE ACHSTETTER

Civil Engineer

Eugene Valentine Achstetter, 79, born in the old Providence Hospital in Washington, DC, on August 8, 1926, died peacefully at his home in Arlington, VA on January 12, 2006, after many years of heart problems. He served in the Navy during World War II, attended Georgetown University and held positions in various U.S. government departments, retiring due to health reasons in 1971 from the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office, as a Civil Engineer in the field of soil mechanics. After retirement, he enjoyed collecting and restoring antiques.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Lena Connell Achstetter; two daughters, Rita (Gene) Katz of Gaithersburg, MD and Jane (Ed) Loyd of Luray, VA; a son Eugene V. Achstetter, Jr. of Sarasota, FL; grandfather of Tami, Seth (April) and Josh Katz, Tommy and Stacy Wallace; great-grandfather of Courtni Cody; brother of Frances Scherer of Fort Myers, FL, Rita (Harry) Coffman of Berlin, MD and Christian (Estelle) Achstetter of Silver Spring, MD. His late father Charles Achstetter was the Deputy Fire Chief of Washington, DC. Two of his works "Past and Present Concepts of Engineering Properties of Marine Sediments" and "General Concepts and a Brief History of Submarine Soil Mechanics" were published by the U.S. Naval Oceanography Office.

Friends may call at the MURPHY FUNERAL HOME OF ARLINGTON, 4510 Wilson Blvd., on Sunday, January 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. Recitation of Prayers at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10 a.m. Monday, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 5300 N. 10th St., Arlington. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery, Washington, DC.
