GOBIND T. NANKANI, Ph.D. (Age 62)  

Of Potomac, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 9, 2011 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD surrounded by his close-knit family. Beloved husband of Helen Nankani. Loving son of Gopi T. Nankani of Accra, Ghana and the late Tirathdas C. Nankani. Adoring father of Soneela (Walker Lewis) Nankani of Brooklyn, NY and Meenakshi Nankani of Manhattan, NY. Devoted brother of Monisha (Anand) Mirpuri of Los Angeles, CA; Suchita (Kumar) Chugani and Raakhee (Haresh) Chugani of Casablanca, Morocco and Manu (Dipika) Nankani of Accra, Ghana. He was preceded in death by his brother, Tommy Nankani, who is survived by his wife, Duru Nankani, of Demarest, NJ. Gobind is survived by many nieces and nephews.
 
Dr. Nankani was a well-respected development economist who held senior management positions in various regions and sectors throughout his 30 year career at the World Bank. A former Vice President for Africa at the World Bank, he was also the Vice-President of the Bank's Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Network (PREM), and former President of Global Development Network (GDN). A Ghanaian national who held Ph.D. and MA degrees from Harvard University and a BSc degree from the University of Ghana, Legon, he most recently served as the Executive Director of International Growth Center, London. He was also, concurrently Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the President of Ghana. In 2008, he was honored with the Order of the Volta Award by the Government of Ghana.
 
Funeral Services will be held at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Virginia on Tuesday, September 13 at 1 p.m.
