HJORDIS ANN LOIS SANDERS
Hjordis Ann Lois Sanders, daughter of Lois Mary and Stephen Thomas Medhurst, both deceased, was born September 14, 1924, and died February 11, 2013 in Charlottesville, VA. Growing up in London, she attended Rosemead Preparatory School and Wadhurst College. In 1941, she joined the British Army
in the Antiaircraft Coastal Defenses at Newcastle on Tyne. Marrying Lieutenant John R. Sanders of the U.S. Army in December, 1942, she left London via military plane in June, 1943 and settled in the U.S. She received a BA in Art History and English from the University of Pittsburgh.
Living more than 40 of her last years in Alexandria, she worked as an interior decorator for Lansburghs and the Hecht Company, volunteered over 20 years for Alive, Inc., served as president of St. Luke's Church's St. Catherine's Guild and was an avid bridge player at Belle Haven Country Club.
Devoted to family and finding joy in life, she lovingly exposed her children and grandchildren to the delights of travel, music, theater, poetry and creating memories. A fine actress and singer, she both acted in and directed plays for the Red Bank Women's Club in Red Bank, New Jersey, sang in the Monmouth Civic Chorus and St. Luke's Church Choir and gave piano lessons to four of her grandchildren. Always an ardent Anglophile, she was loyal to her English traditions, family and country and traveled there often both with children and later grandchildren. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Penelope Sanders Buck and James Buck; Judith Sanders Campbell and Michael J. Henke; Peter Sanders and Molly Sanders as well as seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Hjordis will be buried next to her husband of 52 years in Alexandria, VA. A celebration of her life will be held in a private family gathering later in the year. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hjordis' memory to Alive, Inc., 2723 King St., Alexandria, VA 22302-4008 would be appreciated.
