Of Greensboro, NC, formerly of Arlington, VA for 22 years, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2012, at his home. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout at 16. He was a Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, served in the US Navy from 1964-1967, then received his MBA from Harvard. He had a career in the oil and gas industry and later worked for the Federal Government. He is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Diana Wellons Butner, and his two daughters: Amy Butner Strange of Potomac Falls, VA, wife of Mike Strange and mother to Anderson and Michael; and Alice Ashley Butner Ward of Chicago, IL, wife of Jay Ward and mother to Mae and Spencer. Howard was the oldest of four siblings. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a loyal friend. Services will be held at West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro on Friday, December 14 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to Hospice of choice.
