HOWARD L. AUTEN (Age 89)  
LCDR, USN (Ret.)  

Passed away peacefully on June 25, 2011 at his residence at Spring Hills Mount Vernon, Alexandria, VA. He was born in Ponoka, Alberta, Canada on February 14, 1922 and spent most of his childhood in Washington, DC. LCDR Auten served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII, retiring in 1948. In 1951, he was awarded a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from George Washington University Law School. He was appointed to the US Department of Transportation Appeals Board as an Administrative Judge in 1977 and retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1982, after 29 years of service.
Howard will be greatly missed by his daughters, Maya Anderson of Brandywine, MD and Anita Auten of Wilmington, DE; son-in-law, Jeff Anderson; and grandsons, Jeffrey and Joshua Anderson. His family and friends will remember his humor, warmth, intelligence, perseverance and willingness to give of himself through his service to his country. Howard was a remarkable, kind-hearted and generous man who touched the lives of everyone who knew him.
Family requests that donations be made in Howard's name to Capital Hospice, Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center, 4715 N 15th St, Arlington, VA 22205. Inurnment ceremony will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, October 20, 2011, at 1 pm. Arrangements by Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home, tel 301-632-6624.
