Retired Sheriff of Montgomery County
Of Damascus, MD, died Sunday, February 22, 2004, at home. Born August 14, 1924 in Ohio, he was the son of the late William and Pearl Phillips Young. Mr. Young served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was employed as a Deputy Sheriff in the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department for 14 years. Mr. Young took law enforcement training at the University of Southern California, and later served as Chief Deputy Sheriff. In 1976, he was elected Sheriff of Montgomery County, where he served for eight years. Mr. Young was a member of the National Sheriffs Association and a past President of the Maryland Sheriffs Association. He was instrumental in the development of the Maryland Sheriffs Youth Ranch. He was a member of the American Legion and a volunteer for Cub Scout Pack 1084 of Damascus, where he served as Treasurer for 12 years. He was a member of the Damascus United Methodist Church. Mr. Young enjoyed fishing, gardening and volunteer work.
James A. Young, Sr., beloved husband and father is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anne M. Young of Damascus; three children, James Andrew Young, Jr. and his wife Janet of Eldersburg, William Andrew Young and his wife Claudia of Damascus and Patricia Ann Young Walker and her husband Darryl of Damascus; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Richard Young of Pennsylvania; a sister, Helen Young Walker of California; and a sister-in-law, Mary Young of Salisbury, MD.
The family will receive friends at the OLIN L. MOLESWORTH, P.A., FUNERAL HOME, 26401 Ridge Rd., Damascus, MD, on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Damascus United Methodist Church, 9700 New Church St., on Thursday, February 26, 2004 at 11 a.m., with interment to follow at Damascus Church Cemetery.
