Rev. JAMES S. BETZ
Born December 30, 1938, died January 2, 2013 after a brief illness. Father Betz was a DC native, a graduate of Archbishop Carroll High School, and served in the S.S. Navy aboard aircraft carrier U.S. Intrepid. Father Betz entered the priesthood after a career in the construction industry, mostly with the Vobe Construction Co. Father Betz served at several parishes including St. Anthony's in Washington, DC, St. Bernard's in River Dale, MD, Pastor of Ascension Church in Bowie, MD, and recently retired Pastor at St. Nicholas in Laurel, MD. Father Betz is survived by a sister, Mrs. Francis Jo McDowell (Anne) of Hert Ford, NC; brothers, John A. of Port St. Lucie, FL and Paul M. of Bowie, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2013, followed by a Vigil Mass at 7:30 p.m., and a visitation from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, all at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 8603 Contee Road, Laurel, MD. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD. In lieu of flowers, it is requested the expressions of sympathy be made to The Little Sisters of the Poor, 4200 Harewood Rd., NE, Washington, DC 20017.
