JEAN E. BERNSTEIN  

Jean E. Bernstein, 91, who danced professionally as a young woman with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, and with her late husband, Nathan J. Bernstein, founded Sport Stores Inc., operators of Sport Center stores in Wheaton Plaza and Capitol Plaza shopping malls, died suddenly at her home on February 15, 2013.
 
Mrs. Bernstein, who lived in Washington, DC was born in Hartford, CT, raised in Brooklyn, NY and moved to Washington, DC following her marriage in 1940.
 
Mrs. Bernstein choreographed numerous dance performances for charitable organizations including the "Show of Shows" at Constitution Hall to benefit Adas Israel Congregation.
 
Mrs. Bernstein continued to operate the retail sporting goods stores following her husband's death until her retirement.
 
Mrs. Bernstein was a member of Adas Israel Congregation and a charter member of The Woodmont Country Club.
 
Survivors include three sons, Brant (Maria) of Fairfax, Daniel (Christine) of Alexandria and Steven (Nancy) of N. Bethesda and a brother Robert Kaplon (Joan) of New Jersey. She is also survived by grandchildren: Sarah of N. Bethesda, Lisa Bingham (Wil) of Ruskin, FL and Raymond (Sandy), of Maryland. In addition, she is survived by six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother Martin Kaplon (Sally) of New York.
 
Graveside service at Adas Israel Congregation Cemetery on Monday, February 18 at
2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Parkinson Foundation of the National Capital Area or the . Arrangements by GAWLER'S FUNERAL HOME.
