CIZEK JOAN LAWRENCE CIZEK Joan Lawrence Cizek, as she lived her life, died peacefully on December 4, 2012, at the Greenspring Village Retirement Community, Springfield, VA. She was the second of four children born to the late Dr. Charles K. Lawrence and Ruth Purvis Lawrence. Joan was born in Syracuse, NY, and grew up on her parents' dairy farm in Baldwinsville, NY. She attended Baldwinsville Academy through her junior year of high school. In 1946, Joan graduated from Hopewell High School, following a corporate transfer which brought her family to Claremont, VA. Joan graduated from Adelphi College in 1950, with a B.A. in mathematics. She spent her collegiate summers as a counselor at a Girl Scout canoe camp located at the Saranac Lakes in New York. While at Adelphi, she met her future husband, Gregory J. Cizek, '49. Joan and Greg, (then a Lieutenant of Marines) were married at Christmas time in the Post Chapel, Marine Corps Schools, Quantico, VA. Following Greg's retirement from active military service, they settled in Springfield VA, and built a summer cottage in Nags Head, NC. In addition to her primary role of raising five children, Joan served as a volunteer tutor in the Fairfax County GED Program and as a volunteer tutor/aide at the Rolling Valley Elementary School. Joan was stricken with Guillain-Barre in 1991 and became a quadriplegic. Through superb medical care, her courage and sheer determination, and the prayers of her family and friends, she recovered to the point of being able to live an independent life. Joan and Greg were blessed with five children, Vickie Craig of Big Rapids, MI, Betsy Findley of Springfield, VA, Sue Wells of Overland Park, KS, Greg Cizek, Jr. of Fredericksburg, VA and Andy Cizek of Manassas, VA, their spouses, 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. While her brothers predeceased Joan, she is survived by her sister, Susan Lawrence Yankowski of Berlin, WI, and many nieces and nephews. A reception for Joan's friends and neighbors will be held at Greenspring Village at a later date. Contributions in Joan's memory may be made to Adelphi University, Garden City, NY 11530, or , 3701 Pender Drive, Suite 400, Fairfax, VA 22030. www.fmfh.comwww.fmfh.com
