John Dunlap Obituary



DUNLAP JOHN ALEXANDER DUNLAP "Sandy" Born March 4, 1927, passed away Sunday evening June 13, 2010 at Manor Care Rehabilitation Center in Alexandria after a brief stay post hip surgery. He was a long time resident of Buckner Road in Alexandria before relocating to Sunrise Assisted Living at Mt. Vernon in 2008. John was born and raised in China while his father served as a physician there. He served in the U.S. Army and retired in 2003 after a long career with the City of Alexandria. He is preceded in death by his father Albert Menzos Dunlap, physician and author of Behind the Bamboo Curtain, his mother Eva Wyman Dunlap, artist and illustrator; brothers James and Donald Dunlap and sister Barbara Chandler. He is survived by his sisters Mary (Maida) Morgan and Dorothea Swor. Although never married, John enjoyed the company of his many nieces and nephews. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Alexandria and the American Legion. John took pride in his patriotism and gave generously in support of various organizations. He especially enjoyed family gatherings, was a dedicated fan of Redskins football, the NASA space program, and loved reading, listening to music and watching classic movies. He will be truly missed by his family and friends. memorial Service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, 5614 Old mill Road, Alexandria, VA on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at 6 p.m. Interment private. www.everlyfuneralhomes.com
