JOHN CORETTE Obituary

CORETTE JOHN E. CORETTE, III "Shaun" 6/24/1936 - 12/2/2017 On Saturday, December 2, 2017, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, died at the Washington Community Hospice. He was 81 years old. In 1969, Shaun arrived in Washington, DC, to be General Counsel of the Export-Import Bank of the United States. After seven years in that position, he elected to make Washington his home and established a long and distinguished law career, first at his own firm (Cole, Corette & Abrutyn) and later as a partner at DLA Piper. Shaun's practice spanned the spectrum from corporate to finance to international trade. A graduate of the University of Virginia Law School, he developed an enviable list of long-standing clients, including timber interests and the snowsport industry's national trade association. In 1988, after six months of testimony, he won a famous case for the government-owned silver mining company of Peru against individuals seeking to corner the silver market. He contributed to the improvement of the legal profession through his leadership roles with the American Bar Association and with Georgetown University Law School as an adjunct professor. He is fondly remembered as a mentor to young associates and was recognized on the list of Washington's top lawyers by Washingtonian magazine. Shaun may have become a Washington insider but he never gave up his love for his home state. After his retirement in 2011, he spent the summer and fall months at his home on Flathead Lake. He relished his large, extended family and friends and supported a myriad of non-profit educational institutions, including the University of Montana in Missoula, and Carroll College in Helena, Montana. This cowboy considered everyone a friend and was a larger-than-life figure to all who knew him. He excelled at skiing, golf, tennis, and storytelling. He will be missed for his sage advice, strong opinions, his warmth and love. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Ann, his daughters, Erin Corette (Washington, DC) and Kim Corette (Missoula, Montana), his son Mike Tierney (San Diego, CA), Mike's wife Andrea Migdal, his grandchildren Elyse and Ian, sister Joan Hanley (Rancho Mirage, CA), and brother Bill Corette (Rolling Hills, CA). A celebration of Shaun's life will take place at Columbia Country Club, Chevy Chase, MD on Sunday, December 10 at 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Flathead Lakers (flatheadlakers.org ) or to the Boys and Girls Club of Glacier Country. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Flathead Lakers (flatheadlakers.org ) or to the Boys and Girls Club of Glacier Country.

I had the privilege of knowing, skiing, working with, and becoming of friend of Shaun's. Early on Shaun was instrumental in the growth of my company and IPO. A unique individual, Shaun always brought a smile to my face at some point during our conversations. He will be missed. I am honored to have known and shared time with Shaun. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I was introduced to Shaun by Nancy Pigman who had worked with Shaun at the Export/Import Bank in Washington; Shaun hired me to work for him as an intern at Cole & Corette in the early 80's which included staying in a guest bedroom in his home and having use of his red Alpha Romeo; Shaun continued to be a friend and mentor for the next 30 years and is one of the most impressive and talented individuals I have ever known; we last communicated about 6 months ago - I am deeply saddened to learn Shaun has passed

I had the privilege of working for Shaun in the 1980ies at Cole & Corette, as it then was. It was through him that I joined the firm, he he was always exceedingly friendly and supportive. He had an infectious charm and was a wonderful mentor for associates. He was certainly a formative influence on my professional life, and I remember him gratefully and fondly. I pray for him and his family in these difficult times.

Mary Ann- I was saddened to read about Shawn's death. We became great friends while serving on the Carroll Board, always proud of our Butte/Anaconda roots and many tales to tell about growing up there. Like all members of the board, we greatly admired Shawn for his expertise, commitment, Loyalty, and wit. He will be missed.

MaryAnn, Erin and Kim:

My heart is broken. Shaun is, was and always will be my friend, my lawyer and my mentor. Eclectic doesn't even begin to describe our relationship! He seized life by the throat and will forever be in my thoughts and memories. The times and adventures we all shared can never be forgotten. The world was a better place with him in it.

Mary Ann, Kim and Erin,

Just a country lawyer from Montana is what he used to say about himself. But that country lawyer was as fine a lawyer as I have ever met. I could not have asked for a better mentor or friend. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to visit with him for a couple of hours in October. There was so much to catch up about and so many stories to remember! As recently as this past week I told a new partner how Shaun made me call Terri from the speaker phone in his office when I became a partner st CC&A.

I will never forget him. Please know that you are in my thoughts.

Shaun was a mentor and a friend, and I will never forget him. I feel so grateful to have known him during my tenure at DLA Piper (where he delivered stunning results for clients on so many occasions). Folks could always count on his integrity, practical down-to-earth analysis, good humor, and respect for others. A true gentleman with a passion for living life, especially on the ski slopes or the tennis court. My sincere condolences go out to his entire family. He will be missed.

I was a young lawyer at Exim when Shaun arrived, and like most, I stayed a long time after Shaun went on to other things. That was due in large part to the generous room and help Shaun gave us in growing into our professions. He certainly is fondly remembered as a mentor and a friend. Heartfelt sympathies to Mary Ann and family, and great thanks to Shaun.
