JOHN FRANCIS AKERLEY
Of Silver Spring, Maryland. Born July 26, 1931 in Halsted, Pennsylvania, died April 29, 2012 at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. Son of Edward and Helen (both deceased), brother of Marion and Ed, husband of Mary (deceased), father of Bill, Helen, Kathleen and Ed; father- in-law of Stephanie; grandfather of Thomas, Liam and Olivia; and guardian of Elliot. John (or Zonda as he was affectionately known) graduated in electrical engineering from Case Western Reserve, served in the U.S. Navy
, worked more than three decades for the National Security Agency and in his retirement became an amateur paleontologist who assisted on sites as far-flung as Argentina and Italy. John was a saxophone player, a student of Spanish and of global travel, a volunteer at the Smithsonian and a lifelong raconteur. A memorial celebration will be held on Tuesday, May 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the afternoon at Pilgrim Hills Recreation Center, 1615 East Randolph Road, Colesville, MD.
