JOHN "Jack" PFLIEGER

John Ely Pflieger "Jack"  
Passed away on January 4, 2018 at University of Maryland Hospital after suffering a stroke on New Year's Day. Jack, a native New Yorker, has called Washington, DC home for much of the last six decades.Jack was born in 1931 to Janet McNeir and Jean Paul Pflieger and was the stepson of Pierrepont Isham Prentice (Perry), former publisher of Time magazine. Upon graduation from The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania in 1949, he attended Yale University before following his stepfather into the publishing business.Jack spent 25 years working in New York City for Time, Inc. before relocating to Washington, DC as a lobbyist in Time's Washington office and was later Director of Special Projects for Sports Illustrated. He served on various local boards including Wolf Trap, as well as serving a term as Chairman of the Policy Advisory Board for Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies. He was a long-standing member of The Chevy Chase Club and The Metropolitan Club. An avid fan of competition and the outdoors, Jack could often be found on the golf course, spending time on Maryland's Eastern shore, on the skeet range, gardening and playing cards. His favorite pastime was exploring the world with his wife, and he passed his love of travel on to his children and grandchildren. Jack will be remembered for his unique sense of humor and his ability to be the life of the party.He is survived by his wife Donna Pflieger; brother Tom Pflieger; sister Monique Pflieger Leaman; son, John Pflieger Jr. and daughter-in-law Melissa Mayer Pflieger; son Robert Pflieger and daughter-in-law Julia Talavera Pflieger and his five grandchildren, Jennifer, Paul, John, Oliver and Isabel.Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on January 16, 2018 at the Little Sanctuary at St. Albans. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in remembrance of Jack to Martha's Table and the Friends of the National Arboretum.
