JOHN YATES MERRELL  
John Yates Merrell of Arlington, Virginia, passed away on May 16, 2011. Beloved husband of the late Marjorie Clark Merrell, devoted father of John Yates Merrell, Jr, (Kay), J. Craig Merrell, (Teresa), Karen Merrell Stringham (William), and David Clark Merrell (Laura). Survived by 11 grandsons, nine granddaughters, 16 great grandchildren and brother Richard Merrell of Salt Lake City, Utah. John (affectionately known as JY) was born on February 21, 1918 to John Francis Merrell and Alice Violet Yates in Brigham City, Utah. He first left Utah to serve a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints in Germany in 1938. JY married his sweetheart Marjorie in 1943 and together they moved to Virginia, making it their home for the next 67 years. A graduate of Brigham Young University and George Washington University Law School, he spent his professional life as an accomplished attorney in Washington, DC and Northern Virginia.  Viewing and funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints, Arlington Ward Chapel, 1600 N Inglewood St, Arlington, VA. Viewing will be Friday, May 20 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM and funeral services at 10 AM on Saturday, May 21. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the LDS Humanitarian Services, 50 East North Temple Street, Floor 7, Salt Lake City, UT 84150, lds.org/service/humanitarian.

Brother Merrell was a kind man who I got acquainted with through his great daughter Karen. His family is a reflection of the good father he was. We hope the family finds comfort in the love of good friends.
