Capt. JOSEPH B. JEFFERS (Ret.)  
(Age 100)  

On Tuesday May 15, 2012; of Bethesda, MD; beloved husband of Virginia Johnson Jeffers; father of Bo Jeffers of Seattle, WA, Mary Jeffers of Silver Spring, MD, and Chris Jeffers of Boulder, CO; son of the late Joseph B. Jeffers, Sr. and Laura Oliver Jeffers of Birmingham and Calera, AL; brother of the late Eleanor Jeffers Neel; uncle to Laura Pittman and Nick Lucas of Alabama; after a brief illness. An alumnus of the University of Alabama, he came to Washington to work on the staff of Rep. Pete Jarman (D) of Alabama, then joined the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served in the Pacific as an officer with the Navy's amphibious forces during World War II and later in the occupation of Japan. After the war he pursued a civilian career at the U.S. Department of Defense until his retirement in 1973; a highlight was his two-year assignment to the U.S. Embassy in London in the 1960s. He also commanded a Naval Reserve battalion in the District of Columbia, rising to the rank of Captain, and earned a Master's degree through the U.S. Naval War College and the George Washington University in 1963. Funeral to be held at 2:30 pm on Friday, May 25, at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 5450 Massachusetts Ave., Bethesda, MD, 20816. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Dunstan's Church endowment fund.
