JOSEPH CHARLES HOCKMAN

Died January 13, 2013 at the age of 77 at his home in Manassas, VA. He was born June 28, 1935, in Washington, D.C. the son of Owen and Gail Hockman longtime residents of Falls Church, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Duane Hockman and his son Tommy Hockman. He attended Falls Church High School, Bullis Prep, and Shepherd College. Growing up he enjoyed camping, fishing, and playing sports with his childhood friends. He was an all-around athlete in high school and in college, in football, baseball, basketball, and track. He was a Little All American in football at Shepard College and voted to the All Century Dream Team for his college conference. After college he continued to do what he loved for most of his life in the teaching and coaching profession. He started his career at Culpeper High School in 1961, but moved shortly thereafter to Manassas in 1964 as teacher and coach at the new Stonewall Jackson High School where he remained until his retirement in 1995. He was the Assistant Football Coach and Head Wrestling Coach for almost 30 years. When he retired, he enjoyed gardening with his wife, spending time at the mountains and lake, and being with his family. He loved nature and being outside. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Katherine "Kay" Hockman. They raised 12 children together. He is survived by 11 children, Theresa Allen, Joe Hockman, Lorrie Gallo husband Mark, Judy Rector husband Chuck, Melinda Patrick, Michael Hockman, Debbie Hockman, GailAnn Boyd, Danny Hockman wife Rana, Kimberly Goldsmith husband Chris, Susie Hockman, 24 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren (1 more due next month).
His family will receive visitors at Pierce Funeral Home in Manassas, VA on Wednesday, January 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. where a rosary will be said and from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at All Saints Catholic Church in Manassas, VA on Friday, January 18, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas, VA.
