KATHARINE MARIE MILLER WHITELY
Katharine Whitely passed away on October 30, 2012, at her home in Arlington VA surrounded by her family, after a courageous six year battle with breast cancer
. Born in Norfolk VA on October 28, 1955, she was a 1973 graduate of Norfolk Academy and a 1977 graduate of the University of Virginia. She was predeceased by her parents, Katharine Oldfield Miller and William Sheppard Miller, Jr., as well as her aunt, Marguerite Oldfield Luckett.
Kit is survived by her husband, Captain John Epes Whitely, Jr. USN (Ret.), her brother William Sheppard Miller, III, and her sister, Maria Ashby Kennedy; four nieces, Georgina Offley Miller, Katharine Rawles Miller, Mariah Delaney Kennedy and Marguerite Hannah Kennedy; two nephews, William Sheppard Miller, IV and Thomas Gray Miller. She is also survived by her stepdaughter Polly Reardon.
Kit held a number of senior engineering management positions in the defense sectors at McDonnell-Douglas and The Boeing Company before her retirement six and a half years ago. The consummate organizer, Kit was always involved with planning her Norfolk Academy class alumni activities. After retiring from Boeing, Kit was a leader in her community and her civic association. She was also active in fundraising for and participating in the Alexandria Breast Cancer Walk.
Funeral Services in Arlington will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 5, at Our Lady of Lourdes, 830 23rd Street South, Arlington, VA. Burial in the family plot will be 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 6 at Christ Church Parish, Christchurch, VA. Reception at Selma Farm will follow burial.
