LAUVITA MARIE RICE
Died in Independence, VA on November 21, 2013 at age 91. Until the spring of 2013, she lived in the same home in Falls Church, VA for 64 years. She is survived by four children, Gregory Rice of Dover, MA, Lorna Harrison of Elk View, VA, Vaughnette Lynch of Manassas, VA and Matthew Rice of Fairfax, VA; and seven grandchildren. She was born on February 1, 1922 in Medford, Oklahoma to her parents, Paul and Marie Shire. She had five brothers, two of whom are still living; Robert Shire of Portland, Oregon, and Rocky Shire of Independence, Kansas. Lauvita was raised in Oklahoma and Kansas, moving quite frequently during the Great Depression, as her parents found teaching jobs. Lauvita cut short her college education at Oklahoma A&M in 1941 and moved to Washington, DC to support the war (WWII) effort working at the War Production Board. It was in Washington's National City Christian Church where she met and later married (1945) Lieutenant (USN) William Rice. Upon the conclusion of WWII, Lauvita and her husband began their family and built the house she lived in until 2013. They made the decision that Lauvita's work would be raising their four children. The family was quite active in their church (First Christian Church) in Falls Church where Lauvita was a member for more than 60 years. William "Bill" died in 1991. Lauvita was devoted to her husband and children and her love and care of them was her life's work and reward.
