GUMINA LEO V. GUMINA South Riding, Virginia Leo V. Gumina, 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, November 13, 2012. Leo was born on April 28, 1932 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Antonio and Mary Gumina. He graduated from Marquette University in 1952 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He started his career with the United States Navy Department as a civil servant in Washington D.C. There he met the love of his life, Cordelia Whisler and they married in 1957. Leo eventually moved to the Federal Aviation Administration where he was responsible for various navigation and landing systems. Leo will be greatly missed by his wife, Cordelia, and his four children, Mike Gumina and wife Julie of Johnston Iowa, Jim Gumina and wife Lynn of Western Springs, Illinois, Tim Gumina and wife Karen of Littleton, Colorado and Mary Zimbelman and husband Darrell of South Riding, Virginia. Leo was a wonderful grandfather to his eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Adeline Dentice, Rosalie Sardina, and Antoinette Mages, and his brother Jim Gumina. Leo was active in community programs including coaching and parish activities. He and Cordelia loved to travel and enjoyed many cruise ship trips with their friends and family. Visitation will be held at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel from 5-7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Vigil Service, on Friday, November 16. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 17, at St. Mary's of Nazareth Catholic Church at 4600 Meredith Drive, Des Moines, Iowa. A private family burial will be held at Graceland Cemetery in Webster City, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be made to Precious Blood Catholic Church, 114 East Edmondson St., Culpeper, VA 22701.
