Marvell Evert Obituary

EVERT MARVELL MAGDALENA DOWNEY EVERT September 5, 1918March 27, 2010 Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed on peacefully March 27, in San Diego, California, after a long struggle with Alzheimer''s disease. Marvell Evert was born in Harrisburg, PA to Charles and Eva Downey and is predeceased by her two brothers Wayne and Charles Downey. She is survived by her husband Richard H. Evert of San Diego after 66 years of marriage, son Richard and his family Mary and Matthew of San Diego, son Charles and his family Beverley, Tyler, Emily, Laura, Brandon and Courtney of Romney, West Virginia. Tyler and Amy Evert gave Marvell her first great granddaughter Hadleigh in 2009. She played the piano at Calvary Presbyterian Church as a young woman and was an amateur champion tennis player and figure skater. Married during WW II, she moved with her husband to Norfolk, VA where her husband supported the industrial war effort by building ships. They relocated after the war to Annandale, VA to raise two sons. An avid competitive sportswoman Marvell won sports trophies in golf and tennis. She was active in her church and sang in the church choir, served on the PTA, and was the Virginia Women''s Division Amateur Golf Champion in 1963 in her handicap group. She organized nature center trips, beach vacations, horseshoe games, cooking lessons, tennis matches, and holiday celebrations that kept the grandchildren constantly busy. Memorial services will be held at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church on June 18, 2010 at 3 p.m. The family is extremely grateful for the loving caregivers at the Elizabeth Hospice, 150 West Crest St, Escondido, CA 92025 and request that in lieu of flowers donations in her honor go to that charity.

I was touched by the obituary of Mrs. Evert. Like my father she lived a rich life, and like him she was struck down by Alzheimer's. I hope you will be comforted as I was by the Bible's promise of a resurrection and life in a peaceful new earth, expressed in John 5: 28, 29 and Psalms 37:10,11. There is a beautiful future in store for mankind!
