MARY ELIZABETH MURPHY NELSON

Mary Elizabeth (Murphy) Nelson, wife of Boyce G. Nelson of Alexandria, VA, died on the breath of dawn, July 16, 2012 at home after a long illness. Originally from Halifax N.S. Canada, Mary became a U.S. citizen after arriving in Washington, DC to begin her career as an RN at Sibley Memorial Hospital during the US nursing shortage in 1950. She continued in her love of bedside nursing from 1968 to 1985 at Arlington and Mt. Vernon Hospitals. She was a member of The American Nurses Association and served on the local board of directors for The American Lung Association. Since 1954 Mrs. Nelson had been a parishioner of St. Louis Catholic Church and was involved in many of the parish activities and school events, including catechist and room mother as well as Brownie and Girl Scout leader. In retirement, she regularly volunteered at DeWitt Army Hospital in maternity with the American Red Cross and as bridge coordinator with the Hollin Hall Senior Center for many years. She is the much-beloved mother of four daughters, Sue Nelson-Sargeant (Ron Smith), Kathy Nelson Pollack (Frank) Mary Biggs (James) and Ann Marie Ries (Ric). She is survived by ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who lovingly called her Nan Nan. The family will celebrate a Mass and have an internment at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
