MAYA PAABO (Age 83)
Died peacefully at The Washington Home Hospice on February 17, 2013. She had been suffering the effects of gastric cancer since October 2013. She is survived by her spouse of 62 years, Gunnar and daughter Svea with her husband Peeter and two grandsons, Henno and Timo of Toronto Canada.
Maya Paabo was a research chemist at the National Bureau of Standards for over 30 years, retiring in 1990. She authored more than 70 research papers during her tenure at the Bureau. Graduating summa cum laude from The George Washington University with an undergraduate degree in chemistry in 1956,. She was awarded an associate membership in the national science society Sigma Xi and was also elected to the national honor society Phi Beta Kappa. She continued her studies toward a master's degree on a part-time basis, which she received in 1962. She contributed her time in support of charitable humanitarian work in Estonia after it regained independence, serving on the Board of the Estonian American Fund. Also, she was a long time member of the Estonian St. Marks Lutheran Church.
Born in Voru, Estonia, to Salme and Verner Lannesto, on June 11, 1929, she fled her homeland when the Russian army invaded Estonia in 1944. She spent four years in a refugee camp for displaced persons in Augsburg, Germany. There she met her future husband while attending the Estonian High School, which had been established in the camp. She came to the United States in 1949.
