MICHAEL PALCHEFSKY  

MICHAEL PALCHEFSKY (Ret. Chief Warrant Officer, USN), 90, of Laurel, MD, died Friday, February 15, 2013, at Laurel Regional Hospital. He was born September 29, 1922 in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of the late Ignatius and Anna Palchefsky. Also preceding him in death were his brothers Nicholas and John. He is survived by his wife, Mary "Polly" Palchefsky, a sister Frances Ritz, a son Kirk, a daughter Ann, his daughter-in-law, Cristina Palchefsky, and two grandchildren, Michael and Hanna. He enlisted in October 1940 and after boot training at Norfolk, VA. He entered the Navy School of Music in Washington, D.C. As a member of band 16, he graduated from the school and in June 1941, band 16 assumed ship's band duties aboard the USS California at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After the December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor attack and sinking of the California, Band 16 was sought out and transferred to Combat Intelligence, Pearl Harbor on January 1, 1942. Other NAVSECGRU Stations were Naval Security Station, Washington, D.C., Chitose, Japan, Bremerhaven, Germany, USS Northampton, and NSA Fort Meade, Maryland. He transferred to the Fleet Reserve in July 1960 and permanently retired as Chief Warrant Officer in 1970. He then retired from Civil Service at NSA in 1980. After retirement, Michael continued to play his trumpet professionally until just three years ago.A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2013 in Laurel Presbyterian Church, 7610 Old Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, MD 20707 at 11 a.m.
