Murrell Alvin "Al" Wilkerson, 74, of Alexandria, passed away on Monday, November 19, 2012, at Mount Vernon Hospital.
Born on July 25, 1938, in Lynchburg, he is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sue Wilkerson; three daughters, Beth Hubbard of Radford, Karin Walters of Charlottesville, and Patricia Harker of Fredericksburg; two sons, David Wilkerson and Christian Wilkerson, both of Alexandria; six grandchildren, Luke Turner, Amy Gallimore, Meghan and Lauren Wilkerson, Rebecca and Charlotte Walters; and one great-granddaughter, Scarlet.
The son of a career Army soldier, Al moved to Germany with his family when he was a teenager. The stories of his adventures in post-war Europe have entertained generations of friends and family. After returning to the United States, he attended both the University of Maryland and American University, and later became a leader in the information technology field. He retired in 1998 following a successful 30 year career with the Department of Defense (Army). An avid golfer, Al also enjoyed playing his guitar, fishing, and spending time at the beach with family.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 29, 2012, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1301 Collingwood Road, Alexandria, Virginia, 22308. Demaine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, (800) 805-5856.
