RICHARD HAVEN Obituary

RICHARD ANTHONY HAVEN "Dick" (Age 91)
Of Falls Church, VA passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012 at the home of his daughter in Fairfield, PA. Dick was born August 31, 1921 in Chicago, IL. He was the son of the late Thomas and late Helen Gaffney Haven. Dick's wife of 53 years, Barbara Lou McEachran Haven, passed away in 1997. Dick was also predeceased by his son, John Richard Haven, Sr. in 2004. Remaining family includes his daughter, Carolyn Ruth Horigan and her husband Richard Dennis Horigan, Jr. of Fairfield, PA. He leaves a daughter-in-law, Nancy Zalecky of Amherst, VA. Dick was "Grandad" to Kelly Rose Horigan of Bethesda, MD, John Richard Haven, Jr. of Menlo Park, CA, LTJG Shawn Richard Horigan, his wife Donna, great grandsons Colton and Shane all presently residing in Japan. Dick graduated high school from the US Capitol in Washington, DC where he served as a Page in the House of Representatives. In 1949 Dick received a BS from Georgetown University, School of Foreign Service in Washington, DC. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps prior to WWII and served two tours of duty, primarily in the Pacific from Guadalcanal. Dick liked to joke that his WWII experience both started and ended with the famous actor Tyrone Power. When the news of the bombing of Pearl Harbor hit the air waves, Dick was in a movie theater, watching "The Black Swan", staring Tyrone Power. The last entry in Dick's "Aviators Flight Log Book" listed Tyrone Power as the pilot. Dick left the Corps as a Master Technical Sargent. He looked forward to his yearly military reunions with MAG 25/SCAT. Dick had a great love of aviation was a navigator during WWII and earned his private pilot's license later in life. For over 35 years, he was an enthusiastic tour guide at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. He started at the Paul Garber Restoration Center in Suitland, MD giving his last tour on August 21, 2012 at the Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles Airport. Dick was an expert marksman and shooting instructor, loved politics and history (he was a Civil War reenactor) and could cut a mean rug. He was a favorite dance partner of Annandale's Sunset Grille bonding with his cherished GrillBillys. In lieu of flowers, Dick's family requests that you take a spin on the dance floor in his memory. And remember to thank our veterans for their service. A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 1 p.m. with full military honors. The family requests no cameras at this sensitive time. A flag flying over the US Capitol will be dedicated in his memory. Online obituary available at monahanfuneralhome.com

Dick had style and grace. When he glided in the room, you felt his warmth and goodness. I had the pleasure of being both Dick's dance partner (you were the only girl in the room when you danced with Dick) and a part of a tour group he guided at the Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles Airport. Dick so clearly loved life and we loved to hear his stories about everything--from WWII airplanes to the shooting range in his basement. We miss him very much and know somewhere good he's dancing up a storm or doing loop de loops in the sky.

Dick and Kerry at the Sunset Grill

Although we only knew Dick for a short amount of time, the impact he made on our hearts is not diminished and we are thankful for the honor to know him. For the last two years he was a delight and an inspiration to us and we looked forward to seeing him every week at the Sunset Grill. His presence there made a difference as he always had a ready smile, was a fun and good dancer and always made sure all the ladies got a chance to dance. We were quite impressed him and we know we are barely aware of a fraction of all of his accomplishments.

He is one of the last of the good ones.
