WELLS ROBERT A. WELLS Captain, USN (Ret.) A resident of Alexandria, VA, passed away on November 19, 2012 in a local hospital. Born in 1921 in Marshall, MN to the late Verne and Hetty Wells, Captain Wells graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he was prominent in both athletics and student government and was a member of the Naval Reserve. Upon graduation, he began a thirty-year Naval career as a Supply Corps Officer. He served on a destroyer in World War II and then served in a variety of positions that included: staff of the Naval Supply Center, Oakland, CA; Planning Officer on the staff of the Commander Service Force, US Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbor, HI; NROTC instructor, University of Minnesota; Supply and Fiscal Officer at the Naval Station, Key West, FL; Supply Officer, USS Piedmont; Systems Design Director at the Defense Industrial Supply Center, Philadelphia, PA; Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Installation and Logistics), Washington, DC; Commanding Officer of the Naval Supply Depot, Subic Bay, Philippines; and finally on the faculty of the Resident School, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Washington, DC. His advanced education included a Master's Degree (with Distinction) in Business Administration from Harvard University and the Resident Course at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. His military decorations included the Legion of Merit with two gold stars. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Alice. He is survived by a sister, Wanda Freund of Minneapolis, MN and by his four children, Randolph (Patricia) of Orange Park, FL, Michael (Pamela) of Mount Vernon, VA, Martin (Anne) of Decatur, GA and Rebecca (Les) Mullen of Scottsdale, AZ; as well as five grandsons and two great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends may call at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Dr. Alexandria, VA 22315, on Thursday, November 29, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
